Recently we heard from a gentleman in England who after going through some 'old junk' owned by his grandfather, came across an old tin which contained his grandfather's WWI medals, some Australian WWI medals and uniform badges, and a Lauriston pin! We are unsure of the dimensions of the pin as we have just received the photos, but it's either a hat pin or a lapel pin. We estimate that this pin was circa 1910-1920 and we think these pins were given to Prefects. We don't have a pin like this within the Archives collection, so this discovery is both exciting and intriguing!

How did this English soldier end up with a Lauriston pin? Could it be that an Old Lauristonian nurse working on the front-line gave it to him as a memento? Or perhaps the Lauriston pin is somehow connected to the recipient of the Australian WWI medals.

The School is celebrating its 120th Anniversary next year and our Archivist is always on the lookout for other Lauriston artifacts or memorabilia of interest. We are keen to preserve such treasures from the history of Lauriston and capture the stories of our alumnae. If you discover something, please call Lisl on +61 3 9864 7579 or email ola@lauriston.vic.edu.au.
